AMEX
AMEX is the former name given to the American Stock Exchange
operating in New York. The name
was changed in 2009 to NYSE Amex Equities following it's acquisition by
the NYSE Euronext.
The exchange is popular in recent times for the trading of small cap stocks
and shares.
AMEX is the third largest used in the
USA and is well known throughout the world.
It all began in the 1840's with brokers and members selling shares in
outdoor markets in order
to establish themselves. They pinned up lists of stocks and shares for
sale and waited for
passers by to read them. This grew into a massive venture and created
a way forward for the
trading of stock and shares in companies.
Stock hand signals were used initially in order to communicate
over the din of the outdoor locations.
These signals are still used today and represent the historical importance
of the
formation of AMEX.
